Our Story

Stone Ends is a family-run hill farm, currently cared for by three generations, with a deep connection to the Lakeland landscape. Our native Herdwick sheep have been grazing these uplands for generations. As custodians of this land, we’re committed not only to producing quality food but also to preserving the wildlife, habitats, and heritage that make this place special.

Our Work

At Stone Ends, farming and conservation go hand in hand. Our land management approach is shaped by a deep respect for the natural environment and a belief that good farming should improve the landscape, not just use it.

We’re actively involved in projects that protect and restore our local ecosystem, including:

  • Maintaining our traditional stone walls
  • Extensive hedge planting
  • Woodland development through new planting and care of existing trees
  • Setting aside land for nature to re-populate
  • Using low-input methods to improve soil health
  • Re-wetting upland peat bogs
  • Measuring and improving our carbon capture

These efforts are supported through partnerships with organisations including AHDB (Environmental Baselining), Cumbria Farmers Network, Cumbria Wildlife Trust, Defra, Eden Rivers Trust, FIPL (LDNPA), Friends of the Lake District (FOLD), Greater Manchester & Liverpool Wildlife Trust, LEAF (Journey to Net Zero), Natural England, RPA, and the Woodland Trust.
